It was
1607. A ship full of English people roughed nine weeks of harsh seas and
finally arrived on land, hungry but determined to build a better life in
a new place called America. They came looking for riches, land, or religious
freedom. They brought salted beef and barley; muskets and swords; sheep,
cows, and goatsanything that they thought would keep them alive and
help them build a colony. These people, called colonists, built Jamestown.
Their hard work opened the way for more settlers to come. By 1732, thirteen
colonies flourished along the eastern coast of North America.
